Su Blackwell has such an artful sensitive way with recycling paper. Her undeniably gorgeous sculptures are paper fantasies of incredible intricacy and magical enchantment.
Su Blackwell creates such a delicate newly visited appearance with her art-work, transforming clothes and books into captivating three-dimensional forms.
Ms. Blackwell uses repetitive labor-intensive processes with her finely developed skills at sewing, knotting, folding and cutting.
Su finds her selection of books or rather lets them find her, during visits to second-hand book shops.
Her attention to detail begins with a personal exchange of reading each word in the partnered book, almost as though she is politely introducing her envisioned transformation to the spirit of its literary content and this in turn inspires the preciousness of her work.
“Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. I employ this delicate, accessible medium and use irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions.” Su Blackwell
