One look at the exquisite sculptures of Australian artist Anna-Wili Highfield and you are transfixed into a world of craftsmanship and whimsy. Highfield is a figurative artist based out of Sydney whose work encompasses making realistic sculptures of various animals out of paper. Her art-form came about as a happy accident late one night while she was pregnant and decided to make a present for her unborn daughter. Her method involves taking cotton paper and hand sewing the sculptural animal pieces together with cotton thread to assemble a realistic form with an organic twist. Ms. Highfield’s fascination of her wildlife subjects stems from the very notion of how animals lack self-consciousness, though simultaneously maintain personalities that we as humans can relate to. These personality quirks are ultimately expressed through her sensitive work with each animal created is completely different from one another.
Currently, you can find her phenomenally beautiful pieces on display at the Hermes Store in Melbourne.
