The Black Book of Colors

How do you describe colors to someone who can’t see them?

Experiencing color through the lack of color is the concept of author Menena Cottin’s book, The Black Book of ColorsThis remarkable book of simple, elegant illustrations by Rosana Faria of natural objects — from strawberries to rain to bird feathers — depicts objects not through color and shading but through embossed lines, inviting the viewer to experience them tactilely rather than visually.  It gives insight into how blind people “see” colors.

In the text, colors are described as tastes or by the way they feel with references to both scents and  sounds.

Red is sour like an unripe strawberry and as sweet as a watermelon. It can hurt like a scraped knee.

Brown crunches under your feet like fall leaves. Sometimes it smells like chocolate and other times it stinks.

Green tastes like lemon ice cream and smells like grass that’s just been cut.

Yellow tastes like mustard, but is as soft as a baby chick’s feathers.

Black is the king….It is as soft as silk when his mother hugs him and her hair falls in his face.

The book is designed as an empathy tool that allows a sighted person to step inside the world of the blind, who experience the world through their fingers and other modalities rather than their eyes. SO beautiful.

Atelier de Création

In Rachel Conver’s world, sphinx and oriental cats entwine in a complex feline family tree. Europe’s kings and queens have never been represented so brilliantly, nor paid more homage to than in these stunning and regal animal portraits from the  Ibrides collection.

“I want to give another dimension to the trays when they are not used for their original serving function,” she says. “Instead of putting them away, I want to emphasize their ornamental potential. I’ve always felt some sort of dissatisfaction, even as child, because I felt I had so little hold on what surrounded us. I used to dream of having the power to change things that are put at our disposal in children’s books. Such dreams tend to die away when one grows up. It’s my way of struggling against stillness and fixedness. Working on a color, for instance, to the point of creating another one, gives me a feeling of power on matter! I allow myself the amazing ability to change and improve what seems unchangeable, to the point where I give birth to new realities.”

The result ~ aristocratic lady birds and dapper-dandy zebra gents! What fun!!

Inner-child Renderings.

Today’s inspiration comes from the hands of Ms. Laura McKellar, an artist from Melbourne,  Australia. Laura’s method entails digitally printing images onto fabric and then utilizing hand embroidery techniques onto the photo surface to create quirky masterpieces that speak to anyones inner-child.

My uncle and grandfather were both photographers and I was influenced at an early age by them. I collect film cameras and use my photographs with illustrations. I am drawn to images I find in old 50s & 60s pattern books and have collected many which have had a significant effect on my work.
